Places To Go When You're Feeling Sad

Everyone has different coping mechanisms for when they're down in the dumps. Some would rather go about their day as normal, trying to push their sadness to the back of their mind and act like nothing is wrong, whilst others prefer to isolate themselves in their bedroom and wrap up in a duvet. Whatever you choose is fine. It's just depends on what helps you feel at ease.
However, some may feel a little lost when they're sad, you've probably felt it at some point. You are so consumed with sadness that you aren't quite sure what to do with yourself. You feel as though you should be around people but at the same time you don't want to be, you want to think things over but, at the same time you would rather not think at all. Sadness can be confusing. And sometimes it only lasts an hour, sometimes it lasts a lifetime, but its inevitable anyway and the fact that you feel things only shows that you care.
I thought that I would describe a few places where you can go in times of sadness. These are places that I have been, and do go to, when I don't feel like doing cartwheels around the street and, depending on the situation, they all work in different ways. I feel like everyone has a sad place, somewhere that they naturally gravitate towards when life gets a bit too much, but if you're looking for a new one, perhaps you'll find comfort in one of mine.

Your bedroom
The classic. Personally, I spend a lot of time in my bedroom anyway, which I have no shame in admitting, however, it can really be beneficial when you aren't feeling great to just cut yourself off from the world for a while. Shut your door and pretend you're in a box, away from anything and anyone that may be able to hurt you. You can do what you like or do nothing at all, plus, it's where your bed is so you can get a nap in if you like.

The bath
Or the shower, whichever you have or prefer. In the bath/shower, you're forced to be in there and it's pretty difficult to do anything other than be in the bath/shower when you're in the bath/shower, if that makes any sense. You kind of just have to lie or stand there, meaning it is a great place to think. The shower is also a good place to have a good old cry if you feel like you need one, because the running water drowns out your whale noises.

The park
Just getting outside and going for a walk in general can do the mind the world of good in times of sadness. Get out of your stuffy bedroom, breathe in some fresh air, smell beautiful flowers and remind yourself that you're alive. Watch other people being alive too - it helps. Watch families play together or couples stroll around hand in hand. Notice the little things and immerse yourself in the outside world. Get out of your own head.

The cinema
Even if you don't particularly want to watch a movie, just go and sit in the cinema. Sit at the back if you like. It's dark and nobody can talk to you. You're allowed to be completely alone for that time. Also, the whole concept of the cinema fascinates me. Its just a bunch of strangers choosing to come together to watch a movie, which I reckon is pretty cool. So just think, hey, all of those people want to watch a film with you!

The train/bus
You don't need to have a destination in mind, just sit on a train or bus, stick your earphones in, listen to your favourite songs and stare out of the window. Just take yourself out of reality for a small amount of time and allow your mind to wander as you drive into the unknown.

Your car
Similarly, take yourself on a journey and just DRIVE. Just get OUT and DRIVE. You don't need to have a clue where you are going, just drive and drive and drive some more until you feel like you have driven enough and you have driven the sadness away. You can also blast your music from your radio and have an emotional karaoke session if you fancy.

Your parents' bed
If you don't live with your parents, this may be a tricky one, however, personally, when it's the middle of the night and I can't sleep due to feeling so rubbish, getting into my Mum's bed always helps. I just seem to sleep so much better in there. It's nothing to feel ashamed of.

The library
If you are someone who likes silence, the library could be the place for you. If you don't fancy reading, just go there to have a good think, or even a sleep. Sometimes, sadness can be caused simply because there is too much noise going on inside our heads, our thoughts are too loud, so take yourself to somewhere almost like a vacuum, such as the library, to help silence them.

The swimming pool
Swimming can be enjoyable when you're splashing around in the pool with your friends, however, if you're feeling sad, worried, stressed or anxious, it can also help to ease those painful emotions. Just swim a load of lengths of the pool, stick your head underneath the water every once in a while and take your mind off of everything. Focus on the water. Notice how weightless you are in there and how your body is holding itself up. Nothing is weighing you down. You're free in there.

The shopping mall/centre
If you're on the opposite end of the spectrum to someone who enjoys silence and you enjoy noise, head to a busy place, like a shopping centre. Sit on a bench somewhere and focus on the people around you, busily getting on with their lives. Use their loud conversations and the hustle and bustle to drown out and take over from your negative thoughts. You could also do some retail therapy whilst you're there to help yourself feel better!

The gym
Get on a treadmill, lift some weights, squat it out, get into the exercising state of mind and basically just sweat out your sadness. Put all of your energy into working out rather than making yourself feel rubbish. It can really help you to feel a hell of a lot better and, afterwards, you'll feel twice as better knowing you used your sadness in a productive way instead of wallowing in self-pity. Just shake off all of those negative thoughts and feelings.

Somewhere that holds fond memories
It may be your old school, the church you attended as a child, the sweet shop you used to go to, wherever it is, find a place that holds a special place in your heart and go back there. Remind yourself of the happy times that you spent there and use them to motivate you to get through this sad period. Go somewhere and reflect on where you came from and where you are now. Remind yourself that you can still be as happy now as you once were.

I hope that this blog post helped you. Be sure to let me know where you go when you're feeling sad. <3

Love, Emily :) xx
